Welcome to Petticott Lane (1971)
Petticott Lane Market lies in the East End near Liverpool Street Station, surrounded by pubs and students. It is known as the fashion and clothing market in Spitafields, London. Two markets are adjacent to each other. Wentworth Street Market is open six days a week, and Middlesex Market is open on Sundays only.
The store Tubby Issacs was located on Goulston Street on the East end of the Jewish district next to Petticott Lane and was famous for jellied eels. Tubby Issac Brenner opened the business in 1919 and made a reputation for the best slippery jellied eels for the masses. After 20 years of trading (before WW2), Tubby moved to the USA. His assistant, Solly Gristman, took over the business. In 1982, Solly's nephew took over the business, followed by his son. The business closed in 1989 due to the changing tastes over the years.
My father visited Tubby Issacs after the War and often told us how delicious and slimy jellied eels were.
