Hadar Hacarmel was Haifa's first Jewish neighborhood.-established in 1920. Designed on the slope of the Carmel Mountain Ridge, it was a scenic neighborhood with diverse architectural styles. From 1930-1970 the neighborhood was Haifa's commercial and cultural center.
The Shoe Cobbler is a person my father sketched in the late 1930's. The man chose to work outside his shop and greet the people who passed him. Hand made-rugged shoes/sandals were very important as most people had very few shoes and took care of them. According to my father the cobbler was busy from sun up until sun down mending shoes.
My father enjoyed placing family names in his pictures. The shoes cobblers work bench is an example.
