14"x18" B/W edition of 90 pcs

Safad is also known as "Tzfat." It is located in the northern district of Israel and is the highest elevation in Galilee.

In the early 50's, my father painted a watercolor (in monotone yellow and brown tones) called Safad. I remember admiring it hanging in our home. The lithograph was based on this painting. The lithograph was released in 1967 and sold out immediately. A sepia version of 10 pieces was also pulled.

"I developed this piece from a painting I did in the early 1950s. It is an exercise in using lines to give the illusion of depth, plus using total patterns of black, white, and gray for solidity. And most important, to give this piece - as a result a feeling of life. Prints from this edition are in the collections of the Smithsonian in Washington DC, the Jewish Museum in New York, and other fine collections." E.S.

The painting is in a private collection.
