Man Reading (1960)

6"x 9" B/W edition 3 pieces

“Man Reading” is the first Etching by Emanuel Schary. The man is drawn in shadows and shapes, emphasizing his form, the hat, book, and bowl on the ground. My father described this man as a scholar -hungry to study.

There is symbolism behind this picture. My father was a perfectionist and eager to study the craft of becoming a master of etching. Every etching he drew captures different skills he perfected. The seventh etching (1965), “ Rosh Hashanah,” captures the details he developed over the past five years, leading him to his next medium—lithography. He challenged himself in every medium (painting, watercolor, sculpting, stained glass, and woodworking) and continued to draw etchings until 1974.

This etching was never intended to be a production piece. The three pieces produced were signed, never dated, and lacked his seal. They remain in the private collections of family members.
