East Side(1966)
10"x14" B/W edition size 110
At the turn of the 20th century, New York's Lower East Side was the capital of Jewish America. The area was densely packed with factories, tenements, and dockhands and was the starting point for hundreds of thousands of new arrivals from Eastern Europe.
This lithograph, "The East Side," depicts shops within shops selling toys, catering, and advertising the shop owners' names. My father loved the nostalgia of the Lower East Side as much as he enjoyed meeting the people who lived there. The woman was a shop owner and always had time to share her stories with my father (always in Yiddish).
