George Miller (1894-1965) played a critical role in developing lithography as a practical medium for American artists in the early 20th century. George Miller and American Lithography features 38+ prints by an impressive roster of artists who worked with the master printer(s) to create some of their most memorable images. In 1917, George Miller set up a workshop dedicated solely to fine art lithography. Over the next 100 years, Hundreds of leading American artists - Thomas Hart Benton, Howard Cook, John Steuart Curry, Stuart Davis, Mabel Dwight, Don Freeman, Wanda Gag, Doris Lee, Louis Lozowick, Ivan Albright, Peggy Bacon, Rockwell Kent, Charles Sheeler, Raphael Soyer, Grant Wood, Stow, Emanuel Schary, Childe Hassam, and Martin Lewis turned to the Millers to assist them in exploring lithography’s expressive possibilities.
Burr Miller (1928-2017) began working in the workshop in 1948, and the name was changed to George Miller and Son. In 1965, they relocated to 20 West 22nd Street, NYC.
By the 1970s, Burr’s two sons were also working in the workshop.
A tribute to George Miller and Sons by Emanuel Schary was presented to Burr Miller and Sons in 1978. “My father and Burr had an incredible bond. It was his privilege to work with the Millers and present the edition to them.”
